HAVE HIGHER STANDARDS FOR YOURSELF THAN OTHERS HAVE FOR YOU
Having higher standards for yourself than anyone else has for you, means that you are the author of your life. Rather than report the news, you get to plot, scheme and plan the next chapter. You aren’t a victim when you have high standards and you’re rarely on the back foot. No matter what life throws at you, you have the ability to rise above your circumstances and find a path forward. In short, you get to lead.
The reason many of us don’t have higher standards for ourselves is because it’s a scary proposition. It means we aren’t able to be passive, blame others, be lazy, make excuses or play the victim.
It can also feel unfair. Why should you expect more of yourself than you do of others?
The answer is that by having higher standards, you get an unfair share of the rewards, as well as the joy and the satisfaction of living life at a higher level. When you set higher standards for yourself, you inevitably rise above the pack and open up a whole new world of possibilities.
Having high standards can be scary, until it’s entirely liberating.
