CULTIVATING AGENCY IN THOSE YOU LEAD

Think of the person who had the greatest positive impact on your career. If I asked you why they had such a positive impact on you, chances are you would say something like “they saw something in me I did not see in myself.” That is the gift of agency, and it’s the greatest gift that we can give to those we lead.

When people don’t feel like they have much to offer, they become fearful, lose hope and their field of vision narrows. As adults, they can’t say that they’re scared, so they say things like “I’m cynical” or “I’m pessimistic” or “there’s no opportunity here” or “this problem can’t be solved.”

Conversely, when people feel valued, when their potential is recognized, when their contribution is acknowledged, their self-confidence increases, as does their sense of optimism and their field of vision.

“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” – Helen Keller

QUESTIONS TO REFLECT ON

  • What opportunities do you have to recognize potential in those you lead?
  • Where can you acknowledge their contribution?
  • Are you creating more leaders or more followers?
