A belief is something that we hold to be true, with or without empirical evidence to support it.

The challenge is that our beliefs have significant consequences for our lives, yet they are often unexamined and frequently unhelpful. Most of us were told as children “Don’t talk to strangers.” This may have been helpful when you were five, but how helpful is this belief if you’re now a 25-year-old salesperson?

If you don’t think you hold unhelpful beliefs, start to notice how often you use absolute adverbs. For example; “I’ve never been good at time management.” When you catch yourself, reflect on whether that belief is helping you or hindering you; whether it’s opening up possibilities or painting you into a corner. More often than not, you will start to realize how often you unwittingly undermine yourself.

Once you start to question your unhelpful beliefs, you will be in a position to use this tactic to positively influence others too.

INSPIRATION FROM OTHERS

“If you accept a limiting belief, then it will become a truth for you.” – Louise Hay

“If the problem you’re facing can be solved with action, you don’t have a problem.” – Mel Robbins

QUESTIONS TO REFLECT ON

  • Reflect on a belief you hold; on a scale of zero to ten (with ten being an absolute conviction), how strong is this belief?
  • Why did you adopt this belief initially? How have your experiences changed or evolved since then?
  • Given your aspirations, how helpful is this belief to you right now?
